If you are moving to Barranquilla or staying long enough to want a regular workout, here are the realistic options. The two big chains, Bodytech and Smart Fit, between them have most of the city covered with locations inside or next to the major malls. Beyond those, a few independent clubs in El Prado, Villa Country, and Alto Prado are worth knowing about. Prices below are in COP and were accurate at writing; chain pricing changes a few times a year, treat the numbers as a starting point and confirm at the gym.
- Day pass: COP 25,000 to 70,000 (USD 6 to 17) at most gyms. Ask at the front desk; not always advertised online. Bring your passport or cédula.
- Monthly vs annual: a 12-month prepaid plan is typically 40 to 50% cheaper per month than a rolling monthly. Ask for the cuadro de precios (price sheet) for all plan lengths before deciding.
- Contracts: Smart Fit and Bodytech use digital sign-up with an automatic monthly charge unless you formally cancel. Ask how to cancel before you sign, and keep the confirmation.
- Peak hours: 6 to 8 AM and 6 to 8 PM are the busiest times at mall-based gyms. Midday and weekday mornings are quietest.
- AC: all major chains have full AC, which matters in Barranquilla's heat. Independent gyms vary; check before committing.
- Free trial: most chains offer a free one-day trial. Ask at the desk on your first visit.
"Buenas, ¿puedo hacer un día de prueba? ¿Cómo son los planes mensuales y anuales?"
"Hi, can I do a trial day? What are the monthly and annual plan options?"

What a typical Colombian gym looks like
A few things to know if you are coming from North America or Europe. Most Colombian gyms are inside or next to malls, with strong AC (Barranquilla is hot and humid year-round, this matters). Free weights tend to be more limited than in a comparable US gym; cable machines, plate-loaded equipment, and cardio are well covered. Memberships are almost always sold as monthly, quarterly, semestral, or annual plans; a 12-month plan is significantly cheaper per month than a rolling one. Day passes exist at most chains for around COP 25.000 to 40.000.
You will be asked for your cédula or passport at sign-up. Spanish is the working language; some trainers at the larger chains speak basic English but do not assume it.
Bodytech (the default upmarket chain)
Bodytech is the dominant mid-to-upmarket Colombian chain and has several locations in Barranquilla, typically inside or next to the major malls (Buenavista, Viva, Altos del Prado, others). Equipment is well-maintained, classes are included in most plans, and the gyms feel clean and orderly.

Pricing as of writing: a standard monthly membership runs roughly COP 130.000 to 180.000 per month depending on the plan length and location, with annual prepay around COP 1.300.000 to 1.500.000. Personal training adds COP 300.000 to 400.000 per month for a typical block of sessions. Verify the current price list at the front desk, Bodytech runs promotions a few times a year.
Smart Fit (the cheap international chain)
Smart Fit is the Brazilian-origin budget chain that has spread across Latin America. It has around eight locations in Barranquilla. The model is no-frills: machine-heavy, fewer classes included, big open floors, decent AC.

Pricing as of writing: the basic monthly is roughly COP 80.000 to 100.000 per month, with the Black tier (multi-location access, guest passes) higher. Personal training is not the focus, but available. This is the right choice if you train mainly on machines and care about price.
Spinning Center
Spinning Center on the fourth floor of Buenavista 2 is a full gym with spin classes as its identity, not just a spin studio. Equipment is solid, class schedules are full, and the same complex has a sports club next door with bowling and billiards, useful if you want to make a night of it. A 10-month plan was around COP 600.000 at writing.
Independent and boutique options
Outside the chains, a few independent gyms come up in expat conversations. The Bronx Gym has two locations: Sede Gold on Carrera 51B at Calle 80 in Alto Prado, and Sede Silver at Brazuca Mall on Calle 135 in Villa Campestre. As of writing, Bronx Silver was COP 70,000/day, COP 110,000/month, COP 1,056,000/year.

Action Black opened in Barranquilla in 2024 with a high-end training-system positioning. They have one location at Altos del Prado Mall, with a second at Viva Barranquilla planned. Annual fee was around COP 2,400,000 at writing, the most expensive option in the city.
Hard Body, in the El Prado / Villa Country area, comes up in conversations as a long-established local gym but we have not verified current opening hours and pricing; if you live in El Prado, walk in and check.
