Last updated: April 2026. Barranquilla isn’t a beach-resort city, so the hotel question is really a neighborhood question. Nail the neighborhood and you’ll have a good stay in almost any decent hotel in it; get the neighborhood wrong and even a five-star room feels inconvenient. This guide picks the best hotels in the neighborhoods that actually make sense, at every budget.
Prices in COP: At around COP 4,000 per USD 1, the budget tiers in this guide translate roughly as: luxury (USD 180+) = COP 720,000+/night, upper mid-range (USD 110 to 180) = COP 440,000 to 720,000/night, boutique (USD 90 to 160) = COP 360,000 to 640,000/night, budget (USD 40 to 90) = COP 160,000 to 360,000/night.
Which area suits you: El Prado is central, walkable, and full of restaurants. It is the right default for first-time visitors or short stays. Alto Prado and Villa Country suit those who prioritize nightlife and modern dining. Riomar and Buenavista (newer towers, near the two big malls) work best for business travelers, families, or anyone with a car. Near the airport only makes sense for a very early departure.
How to book: Booking.com, Expedia, and direct hotel websites all work well in Barranquilla. For Carnival (late January through mid-February), book 2 to 4 months ahead. Expect 2x to 3x normal rates and minimum stays of 3 to 5 nights.
What to check: AC quality is non-negotiable in this heat. Confirm hot water availability. Ask about backup power if staying during rainy season (May to June, September to October). Read reviews from the last 6 months, hotel quality in Barranquilla shifts with ownership changes.
"Buenas, tengo una reserva a nombre de [nombre]. ¿Es posible un check-out tarde?"
"Hi, I have a reservation under [name]. Is a late check-out possible?"
First: where to stay
Three neighborhoods cover 90% of what you’ll want:
El Prado, the city’s historic heart, walkable, tree-lined, full of restaurants. The right choice for a first visit or a short trip. You can cover most tourist sites on foot or with short Uber rides.
Alto Prado & Villa Country, the modern nightlife-and-dining corridor, denser, with newer hotel stock. Pick this if restaurants and bars rank higher than history.
Riomar (Villa Santos, Buenavista, Altos del Limón), newer towers, the two big malls, easier parking, closer to the northern suburbs and the Gran Malecón. The choice if you have a car, a long stay, a conference at a Riomar venue, or you’re with family.
Avoid hotels in the Centro Histórico unless you have a specific reason, they cost less but you’ll spend the savings on taxis back to dinner. See our neighborhoods guide for the full picture.
Carnaval warning. Every decent hotel in Barranquilla sells out for Carnaval (late January through mid-February 2026 and equivalent dates in future years). Book 3 to 6 months in advance. Rates double or triple and minimum stays of 3 to 5 nights are standard.
Luxury (USD 180+ per night)
Hotel El Prado
Built in 1930, this is Barranquilla’s most iconic address and a declared Bien de Interés Cultural. Republican-era architecture, a huge tropical pool, palm-shaded courtyards, and the feeling of a hotel that’s served diplomats and intellectuals for almost a century. Rooms vary, some have been renovated thoughtfully, others retain more character than modernity. Pick this for first-time visits, honeymoons, or when you want hotel-as-destination. hotelelpradosa.com. El Prado neighborhood.
Hotel Barceló Barranquilla
A large, full-service 5-star on Calle 78 with a rooftop pool, multiple restaurants, a serious gym, and a spa. The most reliable luxury pick for business travelers and a common choice for weddings. Views from upper floors are the city’s best. barcelo.com. Alto Prado.
Hotel Dann Carlton Barranquilla
A business-standard 5-star with an executive feel, a good rooftop pool, and the convenience of being next to the Buenavista mall. Consistent service, reliable WiFi, conference facilities that actually work. danncarlton.com. Villa Santos/Buenavista.
Hotel Movich Buró 51
Movich’s Barranquilla flagship, design-forward, clean modernist lines, and one of the better rooftop bars in the city. Recent reviews have been mixed on maintenance, so ask for a renovated room at booking. Still a strong pick for couples and design-minded travelers when you want contemporary rather than historic. movichhotels.com. Alto Prado.
Hotel Sonesta Barranquilla
On the northern edge of town near Villa Campestre, a modern tower with a rooftop pool, city views, and better-than-average restaurants. Feels newer than most of the competition and typically runs slightly cheaper than the Barceló or Dann Carlton. sonesta.com. Altos del Limón.
Upper mid-range (USD 110 to 180)
Hotel Estelar Alto Prado
Colombia’s most reliable domestic chain, well-located on Calle 76 in the heart of Alto Prado, walking distance to a hundred restaurants. Nothing flashy, everything works. A good default pick for a first trip. hotelesestelar.com. Alto Prado.
Hotel Estelar En Alto Prado Suites
Estelar’s apart-hotel sibling two blocks away. Larger rooms with kitchenettes and a small pool, better for stays over 3 nights, families, or anyone who wants to breakfast on their own schedule. hotelesestelar.com. Alto Prado.
Hampton by Hilton Barranquilla
Business-standard Hilton service on Carrera 51B in Alto Prado. No character, no surprises, good beds, reliable breakfast. The smart choice if you’re chaining hotel points or want the predictability of an international brand. hilton.com. Alto Prado.
Hyatt Place Barranquilla
Modern, sleek, reliable. On the Calle 98 hotel corridor next to Buenavista mall. Rooftop pool, decent gym, airport transfer at reasonable rates. Another solid business pick. hyatt.com. Buenavista.
Atton Barranquilla (formerly NH)
Rebranded Chilean chain hotel on the 84 corridor; good location for the Villa Country restaurant strip and the Villa Country mall. Rooms are crisp and contemporary. Alto Prado/Villa Country.
Boutique and character (USD 90 to 160)
Hotel Majestic
A renovated Republican-era mansion in El Prado with a pool, courtyard, and about 30 rooms. The building is the draw; rooms are comfortable rather than designer. A favorite for travelers who want the El Prado atmosphere at a softer price than the Hotel El Prado itself. El Prado.
Hotel Caribbean Trade
Small, business-class, reliably good value on Calle 80. Proximity to both Alto Prado and the Centro makes it a flexible base for first-time visitors. Alto Prado/border of Prado.
Hotel Cinco Barranquilla
Newer boutique on the Carrera 53 corridor, clean modern design, small rooftop pool, good coffee shop. An under-the-radar favorite for business travelers who don’t want a chain. Villa Country.
Mid-range and budget (USD 40 to 90)
Ibis Barranquilla
The Accor chain’s reliably cheap option in a good location on Calle 84. Small rooms, thin walls, excellent location; perfect if you’re in town to do things, not to hang out at the hotel. all.accor.com. Alto Prado.
GHL Hotel Barranquilla
A dependable mid-range chain hotel near the Catedral Metropolitana. Gets you into El Prado at a lower price than the boutique options. ghlhoteles.com. El Prado.
Hostal Villa Country
Well-reviewed guesthouse/hostel on the 84 corridor. Private rooms from USD 35 to 50, clean, safe, central. Good for solo travelers and budget couples. Villa Country.
The Meeting Point Hostel
Barranquilla’s best-known backpacker hostel. Dorms and a handful of private rooms, a pool, rooftop hammock area, and a social scene that makes it easy to find people to go out with. El Prado.
Tres Banderas
An old-school 2-star with a tropical courtyard pool. Dated but spotless, and the owner’s personal attention is unusual at this price. A long-time backpacker favorite. El Prado.
Hotels for specific needs
Conference / business
If you’re attending something at the Puerta de Oro convention center, the closest full-service hotels are the Barranquilla Plaza, Estelar San Isidro, and Sonesta. Walking distance to the venue only applies to the Plaza; the others are a 10-minute cab.
Long stays (2 to 6 weeks)
Estelar Suites, Hyatt Place, and the apart-hotel product on Airbnb’s monthly rentals page are all better than a standard hotel room. Look for “aparta-suite” and “amoblado” in Spanish-language listings on Metrocuadrado.
Carnaval
Any hotel within 15 minutes’ walk of Vía 40 is gold. El Prado, Alto Prado, and Villa Country all qualify. Book the Hotel El Prado, Estelar Alto Prado, or Ibis Barranquilla early. Expect 2 to 3× normal rates and 3 to 5 night minimums.
Airport-adjacent
The Hotel Puerta del Sol Prado and nearby budget chains near the airport in Soledad exist, but unless you have a 5 AM flight and no desire to see the city, skip them, it’s a 25-minute cab to the north side where you actually want to be.
Kids, pool, space
The Sonesta’s rooftop pool is the most kid-friendly. The Hotel El Prado’s garden pool is the largest and most beautiful, though the vibe is genteel rather than splashy.
If you want help booking it right
For a one or two-night work stop in Barranquilla, the booking choice doesn't really matter. For a longer trip (a week or more, Carnaval, a wedding, a recovery stay after surgery, scouting real estate), the right hotel for what you're actually doing is the difference between a great trip and a frustrating one.
Mike (Canadian, lives in Medellín since 2011) and Santiago (paisa, born in Colombia) put this guide together with our Barranquilla team. Our concierge Catalina has stayed at every hotel on the list above. If you tell her what you're in town for, neighborhood you want to be in, whether you need walkability or a pool, whether your travel companion has mobility issues, she'll narrow it to two options and book the one you prefer at the best rate she can find. If a longer-stay rate is available she'll ask the hotel directly for it.
Phone Catalina: coming soon (we're activating a Colombian number now). For now, chat at catalina.barranquilla.guide. She'll call you back on WhatsApp if you prefer voice.
We don't charge you. The hotel pays us a small commission only when you check in (the same kind of commission Booking.com and Expedia take). You pay the same price either way. No email list, no upsells, no pressure.
Booking tips
Booking.com and Expedia both work fine in Barranquilla and usually match the hotels’ direct rates. For chains (Hilton, Hyatt, Accor, Marriott), direct booking gets you loyalty points and often matches OTA prices. Check Colombian OTAs Despegar for occasional peso-priced deals that beat the international sites.
Always read reviews from the last 6 months. Hotel quality in Barranquilla swings with ownership changes and renovations. A 2022 glowing review doesn’t mean the 2026 property is the same.
For stays over 7 nights, email the hotel directly and ask for a corporate or extended-stay rate, many properties quietly offer 10 to 20% off rack on longer bookings.
Cash or credit card? Credit cards are universal at any hotel worth booking, but pesos go further at markets and taxis. Most ATMs have a 400,000 to 600,000 COP withdrawal limit; plan for multiple withdrawals if you’re staying more than a few days.
