Barranquilla isn’t the most obvious tourist city in Colombia, and that’s exactly what makes it interesting. There are no queues, no over-crowded viewpoints, and no tourist traps charging $30 for a mediocre experience. What you get instead is an authentic Caribbean city with great food, real nightlife, and one of the world’s great street festivals.
Here’s what’s actually worth your time, and where to book it.
Most operators work through Viator or GetYourGuide; local operators can also be found via Airbnb Experiences. Typical durations: Carnival tours 4 to 6 hours, food/walking tours 3 to 4 hours, day trips 6 to 8 hours. Typical prices: walking and food tours COP 150,000 to 260,000 per person (USD 37 to 65), day trips COP 200,000 to 400,000 (USD 50 to 100). Book Carnival tours 3 to 6 months in advance. For everything else, 1 to 2 weeks is usually fine outside high season. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a refillable water bottle: the Caribbean heat is real. Most tours meet downtown near Parque Cultural del Caribe or the Gran Malecón; confirm the meeting point when booking.
"Buenas, quiero reservar el tour para [N] personas el [día]. ¿Incluye transporte y a qué hora es el punto de encuentro?"
"Hi, I’d like to book the tour for [N] people on [day]. Does it include transport, and what’s the meeting time and point?"
Barranquilla Carnival, The Must-Do Experience

If you’re visiting during February or March, Barranquilla Carnival is not optional. It’s one of the largest carnivals in the world, second only to Rio, and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Four days of street parades, cumbia, mapalé, costumes, and costeño chaos. It is loud, sweaty, and completely unforgettable.
For Carnival, booking a guided tour is worth it, especially for first-timers. A good guide gets you to the right parades at the right time, explains what you’re seeing, and keeps you oriented in the crowds.

Street Food & Market Tours
Barranquilla’s food scene is one of Colombia’s best-kept secrets. The Caribbean coast has its own distinct cuisine, fried fish, arepas de huevo, patacones, and seafood cooked in ways you won’t find inland. A street food tour with a local guide is one of the highest-value experiences in the city: you eat well, learn the context, and discover places you’d never find on your own.
Look for tours that include Mercado de Barranquilla and the city’s traditional market areas.

City & Cultural Walking Tours

Barranquilla has more history than most visitors expect. El Centro has stunning early 20th-century architecture, the old Banco de la República building, the Catedral Metropolitana, and the crumbling grandeur of what was once Colombia’s wealthiest city. A walking tour puts it all in context.
The El Prado neighbourhood also merits a walking tour, the original residential district for Barranquilla’s elite, with Art Deco and colonial houses that are remarkable by any standard.

Day Trip to Puerto Colombia & the Beach

Puerto Colombia is Barranquilla’s beach escape, 20 minutes from the city, with a historic pier, fresh ceviche, and a relaxed Caribbean atmosphere. Most visitors go independently by taxi or Uber, but a guided day trip adds context: the pier was once the longest in the Americas, and the town has a fascinating history as Colombia’s main port in the late 1800s.

Cumbia & Dance Classes
Barranquilla is the birthplace of cumbia, Colombia’s most important musical rhythm. Taking a cumbia or salsa class here isn’t a tourist gimmick; it’s genuinely one of the best ways to connect with local culture. Evening classes with a drink and live music are a highlight for many visitors.

How to Book Tours in Barranquilla
For Carnival-related tours, book as far in advance as possible, good guides sell out months ahead. For everything else, 1 to 2 weeks in advance is usually fine outside of high season.
Viator is the most reliable platform for vetted, reviewed tours with proper cancellation policies. GetYourGuide is also good and sometimes has different operators. For budget travellers, asking your hotel to recommend local guides directly can save money, but you lose the review system and booking protection.
