Riomar is one of Barranquilla's five localities, not a single barrio, and it is the northernmost of them. It covers a large slice of the northwest, roughly 2,200 hectares and around thirty barrios, running from the upper end of the wealthy north out toward the mouth of the Magdalena at Bocas de Ceniza and the edge of the Ciénaga de Mallorquín. That position, between the river and the sea, is where the name comes from. What it's like todayCómo es hoy

For most of the twentieth century this was farmland and open lots at the edge of the city. The build-out is recent, which is why the locality reads as new rather than historic. The signature image is the apartment tower: ten to thirty floors of glass and concrete, almost always behind a gate, almost always with a pool, gym, visitor parking and a porter. Detached houses survive in the older luxury pockets, sectors with names like El Golf, El Country and Villa Santos, but the direction of travel is clearly vertical.

Durante casi todo el siglo XX esto fue finca y lotes abiertos en el borde de la ciudad. La construcción es reciente, y por eso la localidad se siente nueva más que histórica. La imagen característica es la torre de apartamentos: diez a treinta pisos de vidrio y concreto, casi siempre detrás de una portería, casi siempre con piscina, gimnasio, parqueo de visitantes y portero. Quedan casas independientes en los sectores de lujo más antiguos, con nombres como El Golf, El Country y Villa Santos, pero la tendencia es claramente vertical.

Street life is thinner here than in the old center. Ground floors tend to be parking and lobbies rather than shops, and a lot of the day happens by car. The compensation is air and openness: wide avenues, several large landscaped boulevards (Villa Santos and Carrera 65 among them), and the breeze coming off the water. The Country Club anchors the eastern, older-money side of the locality and gives the El Country sector its name.

La vida de calle es más escasa que en el centro antiguo. Las plantas bajas suelen ser parqueaderos y lobbies más que locales, y buena parte del día pasa en carro. La compensación es el aire y la amplitud: avenidas anchas, varios bulevares arborizados grandes (Villa Santos y la carrera 65, entre otros) y la brisa que entra desde el agua. The everyday anchor is the Centro Comercial Buenavista, one of the largest malls in the city. Its first phase opened in 2001 with an Éxito hypermarket, the second in 2009 with a Jumbo, and the two are joined by pedestrian bridges into a single large complex of shops, cinemas and food courts. For most of Riomar, this is where you buy groceries, see a film and eat out without leaving the neighborhood. Universidad del Norte, one of the country's well-regarded private universities, also sits inside the locality, which keeps a steady student and academic presence in the mix.

El ancla del día a día es el Centro Comercial Buenavista, uno de los más grandes de la ciudad. Su primera fase abrió en 2001 con un hipermercado Éxito, la segunda en 2009 con un Jumbo, y ambas están unidas por puentes peatonales en un mismo complejo grande de tiendas, cines y plazoletas de comida. Riomar is overwhelmingly estrato 5 and 6, the top two brackets in Colombia's stratification system, with a few lower-strata barrios on its edges. The residents are mostly well-off Colombian families, professionals and executives, plus a layer of corporate transferees and foreigners who pick it for the new buildings, the security and the proximity to the malls. The feel is private and a bit anonymous: people socialize inside their buildings and clubs more than on the street.

Rents sit at the top of the city. A one-bedroom in a modern tower runs roughly COP 2,400,000 to 3,600,000 a month (USD $600 to $900 at 4.000:1), and two-bedrooms commonly land between COP 3,600,000 and 6,400,000 (USD $900 to $1,600), with larger high-floor units and penthouses well above that. One practical warning if you are renting on a passport rather than a cédula: most landlords here ask for a local co-signer (codeudor) who owns property in the city, or an insurance-backed guarantee (póliza). Both are harder to arrange without a cédula, so many foreigners end up paying several months up front or going through an agency.
