Choosing where to stay in Barranquilla is one of the most important decisions you’ll make before arriving. The city has very distinct neighbourhoods, and the difference between a great trip and a frustrating one often comes down to location. This guide breaks it down by area so you can book with confidence. New to Barranquilla? Start with the city overview for wider context.

Before you book: what every visitor should know
Which area suits you: El Prado is central, walkable, tree-lined, and has the best concentration of restaurants and bars you can reach on foot. It is the right default for first-time visitors and short stays. Alto Prado and Villa Country suit those who prioritize nightlife and the modern dining corridor. Riomar and Buenavista (newer towers, the two big malls, easier parking) are best for business travelers, families, or anyone with a car and a longer stay. Near the airport (Soledad side) only makes sense for a very early departure flight.

How to book: Booking.com, Expedia, and direct hotel sites all work well. For Carnival (late January through mid-February), book 2 to 4 months ahead and expect rates to double or triple, plus minimum stays of 3 to 5 nights.

What to check on every booking: AC quality is non-negotiable in Barranquilla’s heat. Confirm hot water is available (some budget options use solar-only heaters). Ask about backup power during the rainy season (May to June, September to October). Read reviews from the last 6 months, hotel quality shifts with ownership changes.
Say this at the front desk

"Buenas, tengo una reserva a nombre de [nombre]. ¿Es posible un check-out tarde?"

"Hi, I have a reservation under [name]. Is a late check-out possible?"

The Short Answer

Quiet residential street in a northern Barranquilla neighbourhood

For most visitors: stay in El Prado. It’s safe, walkable, has the best restaurants and nightlife, and is where most of the best hotels are. Everything else in this guide is context for specific situations.

El Prado, Best All-Round for Visitors

El Prado is Barranquilla’s original prestige neighbourhood, wide tree-lined streets, early 20th-century architecture, and the city’s best concentration of restaurants, bars, and cafés. It’s safe to walk at night (rare for Barranquilla), and most of the city’s best hotels are here.

The centrepiece is the iconic Hotel El Prado, a 1930s colonial landmark with one of the best pools in the city. If you want character and location, this is the pick. For something more modern at a similar price point, Dann Carlton delivers polished service with a rooftop pool and city views.

Best for: First-time visitors, couples, anyone who wants to walk to dinner
Top picks: Hotel El Prado, Dann Carlton, Estelar Alto Prado

Zona Norte, Best for Beach Access & Modern Living

Zona Norte, Barranquilla's modern hotel corridor near Buenavista
View from Riomar looking toward the Caribbean coastline

Zona Norte is Barranquilla’s most modern district, newer towers, shopping centres (Buenavista mall is here), and a more affluent, international feel. It’s the closest part of the city to the beach at Puerto Colombia (about 20 minutes), making it a good base if beach time is part of your plan.

Hotels here tend to be newer and more corporate in character. Good for business travellers and longer-stay visitors who want proximity to supermarkets and modern infrastructure.

Best for: Business travellers, longer stays, beach day-trippers

Ciudad Jardín, Quiet & Residential

Ciudad Jardín is peaceful, green, and popular with Barranquilla’s professional class. It’s less of a nightlife scene than El Prado, but it’s a comfortable, safe neighbourhood with good local restaurants. Better for visitors who want a quieter base and are happy to Uber everywhere.

El Centro, Avoid for Accommodation

The city centre is fascinating to visit during the day but not where you want to be based as a visitor. It’s noisy, chaotic, and security is a concern at night. The hotels here are mostly aimed at Colombian business travellers on tight budgets. Unless you have a specific reason, stay in El Prado instead.

Puerto Colombia, For Beach Lovers

Technically outside Barranquilla, Puerto Colombia is a small beach town 20 minutes from the city. A small number of guesthouses and boutique options have opened here in recent years. If your main goal is beach time with day trips into the city, this can work, but for most people, basing yourself in El Prado and day-tripping to Puerto Colombia is the better option.

Carnival Season: Book Early, Everywhere

During Barranquilla Carnival (typically February/March), every decent hotel in every neighbourhood sells out, often months in advance. Prices double or triple. If you’re coming for Carnival, book the moment you’ve confirmed your dates. El Prado hotels fill first.
